What Is the Difference Between LSAs and Google Ads?
“What is the difference between Local Services Ads (LSAs) and Google Ads?”
The short answer: with an LSA, you pay when someone contacts you. With a regular Google Search ad, you pay when someone clicks to your website.
Both show up when someone searches for a dog trainer. Both are run through Google. But they look different, they work differently, and you’re paying for different things. Easier to show than tell….

The biggest difference: what you pay for
| LSA | 🔍 Searches → sees your profile → 📞 calls or messages you 💰 |
| Search ad | 🔍 Searches → clicks your ad 💰 → lands on your website → fills out a form or calls |
💰 = the moment you pay
With Local Services Ads, Google charges for valid leads. Somebody has to actually call or message you through the ad.
With a Google Search campaign, you pay for the click. That visit might turn into a form or a phone call. It might also be someone who looks around and leaves. That’s why the website and the landing page matter so much more on this side.
That doesn’t make LSAs automatically “better.” A lead is only worth what it turns into, and that depends on how fast your team answers and how well they follow through.
Side by side
| LSA | Search ad | |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | A valid lead (call or message) | A click |
| What the ad is | Your profile: reviews, hours, service area | Headlines and copy we write |
| Where they go | Straight to your phone or inbox | A page on your website we choose |
| Keyword control | Very little. Google decides. | A lot: keywords, negatives, messages |
| Who can run it | Eligible businesses that pass Google’s screening | Almost any business |
| Badge | ✔ Google Verified | None |
| What wins | Reviews, being close by, answering fast | The right keywords, a good ad, a page that converts |
LSAs trade control for a shorter path
An LSA is built mostly from your profile: your services, service area, hours, reviews and contact options. There’s no keyword list to build and no ad to write. Google decides when you show up, and your reviews and how quickly you respond to inquiries play a big part in that.
Less control, but the path is short. Search, pick a trainer, call.
Search ads give us more levers
With Search ads, we pick the searches we want to show up for, block the ones we don’t, write the message, and send each person to the page that fits. That’s how we separate someone looking for puppy classes from someone looking for a board and train program, and talk to each one differently.
The flip side: more pieces have to work together. Keywords, ads, the landing page and the tracking all matter. A click isn’t a client.
So which one does your location need?
Usually both….as long as each one earns its keep.
LSAs catch the person who wants to call a local trainer right now. Search ads reach people with more specific searches and give us room to explain your programs before they ever pick up the phone. They’re working the same customer from two different angles.
The question isn’t “which one is cheaper?” It’s how many real inquiries each one produced, how many of those booked, and what each new client cost. That’s what we’re looking at.
One heads-up: Google is moving Local Services Ads into a special kind of Performance Max campaign that still charges per lead. So you may start seeing your LSA inside the regular Google Ads account. The dashboard is merging. The difference in how you pay isn’t.
What to do
Choosing, running and measuring both of these is our job. Yours is to answer fast when the phone rings.
Speed matters on both sides, and on the LSA side it can even affect how often you show up. If calls are going to voicemail, that’s the first thing worth fixing. And if something in either account looks off to you, ask me before changing anything.
